the kanji for Reiki

Kanji directly translates to: “Chinese character.” Kanji are used in the Japanese writing system as symbolic characters, originally adapted from Chinese characters.

If we ever falter or become confused as Reiki practitioners, we can meditate and contemplate the kanji for Reiki. Meditating on this symbol has brought me much more deeply into my practice.

Reiki has many different styles of kanji, but this particular one is my favorite as it paints a picture (ha). and offers wisdom into the essence of the path of Reiki.

REI

Rei in this kanji can be seen as a spiritual rain sprinkling down from the celestial realms (the Upper Diamond, Heaven Ki); this spiritual rain is abundant and fills up the three cups below - These three cups are known as San Mitsu - The Three Mysteries, or Three Secrets. These three mysteries are Mind, Body, and Spirit. Therefore, the Spiritual Rain (REI) fills the mind, body, and spirit.

KI

Ki in this kanji is represented as a character of a wood fire, often thought to be cooking a bubbling pot of rice. We can see the steam rising from the Earth (Lower Diamond, Earth Ki). This bowl of rice warms and nourishes the three mysteries. mind, body, and spirit.

This kanji represents the blessing of the human experience.

We have the Earthly Ki - the rice, the steam, the fire.

The Celestial Ki - the spiritual rain.

Both meet in the center, nourishing the mind, body, and spirit.

Where do we lie in between the earth and the heavens? In the middle.

We are centered between the two. This masterful symbol reminds us that we are supported and surrounded by nourishing, abundant spiritual energy from all sides.

On our bodies, what lies between the Lower Diamond and the Upper Diamond?

The Middle Diamond - The Heart. Heart ki. Heart Energy. Compassion. Unconditional love.

Perhaps, this kanji represents a roadmap on the path of enlightenment…
